Football is a game which can bless your life with enormous amounts of money, fame, and prestige.

But is Football all that it is cracked up to be?

The unfortunate fact is that this game has a dark side which a lot of people never talk about.

Football is a game where you can become a millionaire from one day to the next. And the fact is that this can lead to players being unable to control their lives, and getting into massive amounts of trouble on or off the field.

It’s easy to see why this happens.

If you take a young man and give them access to large amounts of money and fame, this can quickly go straight to their head, and result in poor decision making amongst other things.

Four years later he hung himself in prison.

It can take a serious toll of your mental and physical health, and the strain it places upon your body is incredible

An extremely good example of this is Aaron Hernandez, the tight end for the New England Patriots. His short career was plagued with controversy and several serious issues.

He was said to be a heavy drug and alcohol user since high school and was involved in numerous bar fights and other incidents of violence. Hernandez was also arrested for drunk driving and possession of firearms and in 2007 he was called in by detectives in connection with a double shooting, but ultimately released.

Five years later he was investigated in connection with a double homicide. Two men were murdered in a drive by shooting and Hernandez was strongly suspected of being the shooter. And although he faced indictment, the trial was later acquitted due to lack of evidence.

He got into trouble again in 2013 when a man accused Hernandez of shooting him and tried to extort five million dollars from the player.

These incidents were bad enough, but things finally came to a head when he was arrested and convicted for murder. Hernandez was given life in prison and convicted of firearms charges.

Four years later he hung himself in prison.

This is a tragic and alarming tale. The most shocking part was that researchers would later study his brain and diagnose him with chronic traumatic encephalopathy. This condition is caused by repeated head trauma and can lead to poor judgement, impulse control, aggression, and anger.

Was Hernandez simply a thug or did this condition lead to his actions?

Most Football players never run into problems and have great careers. It’s a certain small percentage which get into trouble. Were these people already predisposed, did the fame and money go to their heads or did the physical toll of football destroy their mental health?

Whether it is a case of them being naive and throwing away their opportunities, or a case of injuries causing mental health conditions, who can say?

What we can say is that this is a serious issue which should be taken seriously by players and fans alike.
